I still remember how amazed I was, as I followed the Ishikari River and entered Asahikawa, the central town of northern Hokkaido, and saw the Asahibashi Bridge for the first time.
Countless rivets secured the iron bridge, which appeared to be unshaken or disturbed by anything; the words “Pomp and Circumstance,” come to mind.
On the other hand, the soft curves of the arches that bridge the Ishikari River provide a sense of gentleness. It is the symbol of Asahikawa, and gathering place for its citizens throughout the four seasons.
