The Toyohira River is a tributary of the Ishikari River and a Class A river that flows through downtown Sapporo. It has its source in Mt. Koizari (alt. 1,235 m), joins with mountain streams and merges with the Ishikari River in the northern parts of Sapporo. The Hoheikyo and Jozankei dams in its upper reaches provide the city water of Sapporo. Floods used to happen frequently in the river, but thanks to anti-flood measures in recent years, the riverbed is now used for marathons, fireworks and various other events and leisure activities. In autumn, salmon swimming upstream from the Ishikari River can be observed.

The name Toyohira is said to come from tui-pira (collapsing cliff) in the Ainu language.
