The Yubari River flows from Mt. Ashibetsudake (alt. 1,727 m) of the Yubari Mountains and, via Naganuma, Namporo, the Kurisawa area of Iwamizawa, Yubari, Kuriyama and Yuni, merges with the Ishikari River in Ebetsu. It used to be a tributary that merged with the Chitose river, but the channel was changed to the present form for flood control. One of its features is the magnificent river landscape, including beautiful gorges, such as Chidorigataki Waterfall and Ryusenkyo Gorge, that spread in its upper reaches and exposed riverbed rocks near the Taratsu Bridge. In addition, the Yubari Shuparo Dam was completed in FY 2014.

The name Yubari is said to come from yu-paro (mouth of the river where mineral water springs out).
