The Taisetsu Dam was completed in 1975. On its west side is the Sounkyo Onsen resort, which is one of the largest of its kind in Hokkaido and has the Canyon Mall modeled after a Canadian mountain resort, creating an atmosphere different from other hot spring resorts. The dam is surrounded by Daisetsuzan National Park.
