Hoheikyo Dam, completed in 1972, was constructed to protect Sapporo City where urbanization was progressing and to meet the increasing water and electricity demands. The area around the dam is popular as a leisure spot close to downtown Sapporo and is especially beautiful in the autumn leaf season. It has also been chosen as one of the Top 100 Water Resource Forests and the Top 100 Dam Lakes by the Forestry Agency.
