Kanayama Dam constructed in the upper reaches of the Sorachi River was completed in 1967. It is a hollow gravity dam having a hollow interior and is the only one of its kind in Hokkaido. Blessed with a favorable location close to Furano and Sapporo and a rich natural environment, the area around Lake Kanayama has diverse facilities for camping, canoeing, rafting, fishing and other outdoor leisure activities.
Lake Kanayama formed by the Kanayama Dam has a maximum capacity of 150 million m3, which is an amount that can supply domestic water (water used for baths, laundry, cooking, etc.) for the entire population of Hokkaido for three months.
