The Chubetsu Dam is located upstream of the Chubetsu River in the Ishikari River system, and is the gateway to the Asahidake and Tenninkyo hot springs.
During the winter, the lake freezes over and becomes a snowfield, but in the short period before it becomes a snowfield, the reflection of Mount Asahidake on Lake Nakabetsu is a divine sight, a sight worthy of the Kamuimintara (the Ainu word for garden where the gods play).
