From Sapporo to the Whole Country!
Sending out a New Culture, “Kawami.”
Sapporo Kawami 2019

“Hanami in spring, Kawami in summer, making the Toyohira River more fun”.
From August 10 (Sat.) to 11 (Sun.), I participated in “Sapporo Kawami 2019” held at Horohira Bridge on the Toyohira River (Sapporo City).

The weather was cloudy on Saturday but cleared up on Sunday, and the temperature rose. It was a perfect day for the event. At the venue, there were many events such as food and drink booths where you could fully enjoy Hokkaido’s food and live performances.

There was also an exhibition booth for the Toyohira River Floods, Disaster Prevention, and Kawatabi Hokkaido Project. The history of the Toyohira River floods and details of the Kawatabi Hokkaido Project were introduced on posters.

As the afternoon wore on, the temperature rose rapidly. It was impressive to see children enjoying the cool water in the river. In the evening, as you can see, the event was a huge success. People lined up at the stalls to buy beer and other beverages and food.

As night, people began to gather at the venue for one of the main events, the light-up of the Horohira Bridge on the Toyohira River. At 7:00 p.m., after a toast and countdown by the organizers, the event reached its peak when the Horohira Bridge was lit up.

The lights on the surface of the Toyohira River were fantastic and attracted many citizens.

From Sapporo to the whole country! Creating a new summer culture
I hope that Kawami will continue to take root as an event representing the short summer in Hokkaido and as a new culture to be transmitted from Sapporo to the rest of Japan.
