In winter, the Teshio River basin can drop below minus 20 degrees Celsius.
In the bitterly cold weather, the river is usually completely frozen over in January and the river is icebound for about two months.
When bridges had not yet been built over the Teshio River, there were several ferry crossings in the basin, and in winter ferrymen would lay willow and other materials on the icy river and build ‘ice bridges’ to ferry people and horses across.
With the arrival of spring, the ice gradually melts, and the ‘great melting’ of the ice, when it flows out all at once with a roar, is a tradition in the area.
