Creating Vibrant Communities through Waterfront Development

Biratori Town’s Kawamachi-zukuri initiative has received the Kawamachi Grand Prize in recognition of its advanced and exemplary efforts among waterfront development projects promoted nationwide.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism promotes Kawamachi-zukuri, an initiative aimed at creating lively communities by making use of waterfront spaces. The Kawamachi Grand Prize is awarded to outstanding projects selected as models for others from among 286 Kawamachi-zukuri sites across Japan. Since the award was established in fiscal year 2018, only 12 locations nationwide have been selected.

In fiscal year 2024, three locations nationwide, including Biratori Town, were chosen for the award. This marks the first time a Kawamachi-zukuri project in Hokkaido has received the prize.

The award ceremony was held on February 6, 2025, at the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, where the certificate was presented to the Mayor of Biratori Town by the Minister.
