Organized by the certified river cooperation group Nature Study Group in Mukawa, this annual activity involves weeding the artificial tidal flat at the mouth of the Mukawa River in order to conserve the area’s rich natural environment and waterfront ecosystem. The activity has been held once a year and marked its 21st year this year.
On June 28, the weeding work in the artificial tidal flat was successfully completed. We were blessed with surprisingly fine weather, and the presence of a breeze was a great relief. Participants came not only from the local area but also from as far away as Muroran and Sapporo, for which we are truly grateful. A total of 17 people took part.
The grasses had grown taller than in previous years, making the work more challenging. Even so, everyone worked tirelessly, sweating as they focused on clearing vegetation mainly around the waterside near the entrance to the artificial tidal flat and along the water exchange channel. We would like to express our sincere thanks to all participants.
During the activity, Tufted Ducks were seen floating on the tidal flat, and terns repeatedly dove for fish. Although this weeding took place during a season of active growth and breeding, it once again reminded us that the dedication and care of each participant continue to support and sustain this artificial tidal flat.
