At the Toyohira River Salmon Science Museum in Sapporo, around 3,000 salmon fry are raised in tanks inside the indoor rearing and exhibition room. Their silvery bodies glint as they swim gracefully through the water, captivating the attention of visitors.
These young salmon are scheduled to be released into local rivers as part of hands-on release programs conducted with nearby elementary schools, helping children learn about salmon ecology and river environments.
I visited the museum on April 1.

After entering the museum, visitors first arrive at the main exhibition hall. The rearing and exhibition room is located further inside. On the left side near the entrance, there is also a tank featuring “Shakemaru,” the Fighters-themed salmon character—another fun highlight to enjoy.
An explanation panel introduces the salmon fry raised in the tanks. They hatched on December 14 of last year and have grown steadily over the past two and a half months.
