I went to the upper reaches of the Teshio River, but the sky was cloudy. Reluctantly, I moved downstream, and when I arrived at the river mouth, the sky was a clear blue.

Statue of Takeshiro Matsuura at Kagaminuma Seaside Park
An explorer of the Edo period, often called the father of Hokkaido’s name. The statue seems to be gazing upstream along the Teshio River.

Kawaguchi Archaeological Site Scenic Forest
This site, spanning from the Late Jomon to the Satsumon period, has 230 pit dwellings along the Teshio River. Some reconstructed pit dwellings are on display.

Teshio River Historical Museum
The former red-brick town hall, known as the “Red Brick,” has been repurposed as the Teshio River Historical Museum. Inside, the Nagato-maru-a boat that once transported goods along the Teshio River-welcomes visitors.

Spacious Teshio River Riverside Park
Curious, I stopped by and found the “Sunset Swing.” It appears to be made from driftwood, and you’re not supposed to push or swing it. It’s a perfect spot to enjoy the sunset.
