The Sunagawa District Kawamachi Project has received the “Kawamachi Grand Prize” as an exemplary and pioneering initiative among “Kawamachi Projects” (riverside community development initiatives that revitalize local areas by making use of waterfront spaces) being promoted nationwide.

The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism promotes “Kawamachi Projects,” which aim to revitalize local communities by making use of waterfront areas. The “Kawamachi Grand Prize” honors exemplary and pioneering initiatives selected from 303 “Kawamachi Projects” nationwide. Since the award’s establishment in fiscal year 2018, a total of 15 locations across Japan have been recognized.

In fiscal year 2025, two locations nationwide were selected for the award. This marks the second recipient from Hokkaido’s “Kawamachi Projects,” following the “Biratori Town Kawamachi Project” which received the award in fiscal year 2024.
