Air bubbles form when gas produced from the bottom of Tokachi’s Lake Nukabira are trapped inside ice. Called as “ice bubbles”, many tourists and photo enthusiasts visit these when winter comes. However, these ice bubbles can be seen at an earlier time at Lake Onneto where winter comes earlier than Lake Nukabira.
In recent years, people who want to see the ice bubbles at an earlier time walk on top of the frozen lake to take pictures of the ice bubbles. When it’s sunny, it’s also a spot where visitors can take a photo from an angle that includes Mt. Meakan and Mt. Oakan.Note that roads leading close to the lake are closed during winter season so visitors have to walk about 8km from Nonaka Onsen.
