【Mt. Tarumae Volcano Erosion Control Project】
When Mt. Tarumae erupts and generates a mudflow, it is expected to cause significant damage to the Tomakomai City area.
In addition, the damage to railroads, highways, national highways, airports, ports, and other facilities that support life and industry in the Hokkaido area could have a tremendous impact on social functions not only in the Hokkaido area, but throughout Japan.
In order to mitigate damage, it is important to take countermeasures before an eruption occurs, so in 1994, we designated Mt. Tarumae as a volcanic erosion control project under direct national control and began work on it.
Erosion control facilities are being developed especially for mountain streams where large amounts of mud flows are expected to cause serious damage.
In addition to the maintenance of erosion control facilities, we are also promoting emergency mitigation measures for volcanic eruptions, such as the study of emergency measures (hard measures) and the maintenance of monitoring facilities (soft measures), in order to “mitigate damage as much as possible” in the event of a disaster.
