The Mukawa River has its source in Mt. Karifuridake in the northern part of the Hidaka Mountains, merges with the Hobetsu River in the Hobetsu area of Mukawa Town and pours into the Pacific Ocean from the Mukawa area of the town. The river is blessed with a rich natural environment, including the tidal flat spreading at its estuary, which is attracting attention as a stopping point of sandpipers, plovers and other migratory birds. It has also been known as a “river of good catches” since the olden days as many shishamo smelt and salmon swim up the river.
Shimukappu Village in its upper reaches is known for the Akaiwa Seigankyo Gorge and autumn leaves along the Sekisho Jukai Road. The Hobetsu area in its middle reaches has the Fukuyama Gorge and other scenic spots and is popular for rafting, fishing and other activities. The lower reaches are dotted with thoroughbred ranches, where pastured horses feeding on grass can be seen.

There are different theories concerning the origin of the name Mukawa, such as mukka-pet (clogged river) and muka (place with spring water).
