The Tokachi River has its source in Mt. Tokachidake (alt. 2,077 m) of the Taisetsu Mountains, flows through the Tokachi Plain and pours into the Pacific Ocean from Toyokoro Town. The Tokachi river basin has grand and diverse natural landscapes, including Daisetsuzan National Park, Akan National Park and Hidaka Sanmyaku-Erimo Quasi-national Park, and is full of tourist attractions, such as hot springs, gourmet food and sweets. It is also popular for canoeing, rafting and other outdoor sports.

●Origin of the river name
As mentioned in MATSUURA Takeshiro’s proposal of place names that “the river’s estuary is divided into two in the east and west and it looks like milk flowing out from breasts,” the name Tokachi is said to come from tokapuchi (breasts) in the Ainu language.
