[Rivers and dams in Hokkaido]
Yubari Shuparo Dam

It is a relatively new multipurpose dam in Hokkaido completed in FY 2014. The concrete gravity dam has a free-selective air-lock intake system that is very rare in Japan. A sangen (tri-stringed) bridge that is a rare structure in the world is known as a “phantom bridge” as it is usually underwater in Lake Shuparo and becomes visible only in a dry season that comes once every several years. The Oyubari Dam, which supported the region for five decades before construction of the Shuparo Dam, is also underwater of the dam lake (Lake Shuparo).
