[Rivers and dams in Hokkaido]
Chubetsu Dam

Chubetsu dam was constructed in the upper reaches of the Chubetsu River and completed in 2007. There are popular tourist spots upstream of the Chubetsu Dam, including the Asahidake and Tenninkyo hot spring resorts. Lake Chubetsu surrounded by hills and columnar joints is a photogenic spot with beautiful reflections of fresh greenery in June and autumn leaves in October on the lake’s surface. The Shinsui Hiroba (lakeside square) by the lake has a sandy beach where fishing on boats, appreciating Hokkaido’s nature in kayaks or on stand-up paddle boards (SUP) and various other activities can be enjoyed.
Spring water at the foot of Mt. Asahidake has been chosen as one of the best 100 natural water sources by the Ministry of the Environment.
