Known as one of the most challenging mountain passes in Tokachi, Horoka Pass is closed to traffic every winter and reopens with the arrival of spring.Descending the pass leads to Lake Shikaribetsu, while the opposite side leads to Lake Nukabira; this mountain route connecting the two lakes is a popular destination for drives and motorcycle tours.
The “Spring Kickoff Cycling” event is a one-day cycling-only event held before the pass is opened to the general public.
This year saw a record-high 94 participants, who enjoyed an exhilarating hill climb while taking in the beautiful scenery unique to this time of year, including Lake Shikaribetsu, which was still frozen.
