In the past, the Hobetsu district of Mukawa was known for its thriving “log-floating” industry, in which timber cut from the mountain forests upstream was transported to collection points using the river’s current.

The Log-Floating Festival features the “Hokkaido Human Log-Floating Competition,” which turns this traditional practice into a competitive event.
