The “Jukon Festival” began in 1971 when a large katsura tree adorned with the “Jukon Dragon” was paraded through the town.
Honoring the legendary dragon said to have dwelled in the Hidaka Mountains since ancient times as a guardian deity, the festival expresses gratitude to the trees of the forest and passes on to future generations—through the “Jukon Festival”—the spirits of the trees in the Hidaka mountains that have been protected by the dragon
Beloved by many as an event where anyone can participate and enjoy the experience, it features a variety of attractions, including a food market showcasing local specialties, traditional performing arts and stage performances, and a spectacular fireworks display launched from the slopes of Hidaka International Ski Resort.
