Located about a five-minute drive from central Obihiro City is the Obihiro City Wild Plant Garden, where wild plants and trees native to the Tokachi Plain have been preserved in their original, natural state. The Utsubetsu River flows through the garden, and salmon can sometimes be seen returning upstream. The garden hosts several guided walking events each year that are free to join and eagerly anticipated by plant enthusiasts.
In June, an observation walk focusing on endangered and rare species was held. Participants first received an explanation about rare species and invasive plants before touring the garden.
Learning about flowers at their peak, intentionally planted invasive species, and the garden’s seasonal changes made the experience both educational and engaging, inspiring visitors to return in different seasons. Even without a guide, plant name labels and brochures are available, making this a highly recommended green spot to visit right in the city.
