The “All Hidaka Uma-Uma Marche” tourism and local products fair was held over two days on November 19 (Wed) and 20 (Thu) at the Kita 3-jo Intersection Plaza (West) in the Sapporo Ekimae-dori Underground Walkway.
Specialties from all seven towns of the Hidaka area—Hidaka, Biratori, Niikappu, Shinhidaka, Urakawa, Samani, and Erimo—came together in one place, drawing large crowds and creating a lively atmosphere.
From Biratori Town: Staff from the Tourism and Commerce Division sold a wide range of local favorites, including Nispa no Koibito tomato juice, Ezo deer jingisukan, Biratori Wagyu hamburg steaks, and Biratori black pork hamburg steaks. Mr. Iwamoto kindly helped with photography again this year.
From Shinhidaka Town: Meat products under the Shizunai Agricultural High School brand Yawara no Michi, including Mitsuishi beef, whey-fed pork, and chicken, were on sale. These items are proudly made in collaboration with students, using sake lees from the local sake Shizunai Suisei.
Hidaka Kombu Challenge: Visitors enjoyed a fun “all-you-can-pack” Hidaka kelp challenge—500 yen for 60 seconds. Many left with bags packed to the brim.
Hidaka Kombu Lottery: Win Hidaka kombu if you’re lucky; if not, a candy consolation prize awaits.
Hidaka Expressway Panel Exhibition: Displays highlighted the vital role of the Hidaka Expressway in racehorse transport, emergency medical services, and stable distribution of agricultural products. The Niikappu Interchange is scheduled to open by the end of the fiscal year.
Japan’s Leading Horse-Breeding Region: The Hidaka area accounts for about 80% of Japan’s racehorse production. Extending the expressway improves transport safety by reducing stop-and-go risks, easing the burden on horses.
Monbetsu Racecourse: Since 2023, the racecourse has used white sand that looks stunning under night lighting. Surprisingly light to the touch, it is designed to be gentle on horses’ legs.
Popular TV Drama Connection: The TBS Sunday drama The Royal Family, currently airing, has generated buzz—Hidaka is featured as both a setting and filming location.
Digital Signage: High-resolution footage showcased horses from Yogibo Versailles Resort Farm (Hidaka Town).
Local Mascots Welcome Visitors: Mascots from across the Hidaka area greeted guests. The event’s name cleverly plays on “uma-uma,” meaning both delicious food and horses—two things Hidaka is famous for.
