On April 17, the 43rd Salmon Fry Release Ceremony, organized by the Eniwa Citizens’ Salmon Association, was held along the riverbank of the Izari River, upstream of Eniwa Bridge.
Approximately 700 participants, including kindergarten children, elementary and junior high school students, and association members, gathered to release around 10,000 salmon fry into the river.
The fry were raised by local schools and organizations after fertilized eggs were provided by the Hokkaido Salmon and Trout Enhancement Association. After several days of poor weather, the event day was blessed with clear skies. Under the early summer sunshine, the children cheerfully released the fry into the river.
The Chitose River Office, which manages the river, ensured safety on the day by carefully watching over the children from within the river, implementing thorough safety measures throughout the event.

Greeting from Mayor Harada of Eniwa City:
“The Izari River is a wonderful river where we can observe salmon returning upstream. Through releasing salmon fry, I hope children will nurture a deep love for the river.” His warm words resonated with all participants.

Scooping up the salmon fry that everyone raised together using small plastic cups.

Releasing the fry into the Izari River with care. Watching their footing, the children made several trips, each time wishing for the salmon to grow strong and return to the river one day.

Members of the Chitose River Office safety team keeping watch. Thanks to their regular training, a fully prepared safety system was in place.
